Zen meditation and Artistic imaginations
[For Saihokai Members]

Zen meditation and Artistic imaginations[For Saihokai Members]

Saihoji has woven a long history of 1300 years, going through repeated periods of devastation and revival.
Today exists because of this accumulated history.
We too are part of this history, and we are beings that connect history to the future.

We will be holding a special program for only two days, where you can experience this "Multi-Layered Passage of Time" from various perspectives.
As a first-ever attempt, we have created a space where you can connect with Saihoji's history through art.

The theme is "Multi-Layered Passage of Time".
For this project, the emerging and innovative artist Kenryou Gu has created an artwork. Gu reconstructs the sensory experiences gained during his time spent at Saihoji and shows the profound world woven by its history.
Practicing zazen and engaging with art, followed by time spent in the garden, you'll find yourself filled with new realizations, offering an opportunity to expand your perspective and soul.
We invite you to experience a deeper dialogue with your true self.

After practicing zazen and appreciating the artwork, please enjoy the winter garden.
During this period, a new garden path is being created as part of a restoration project to revive a water canal. Please also take the time to observe the evolving state of the garden.*
*Please note that some areas of the garden may not be accessible, and there may be some noise due to the restoration work.

[Artist]
Kenryou Gu

Kenryou Gu was born in Kyoto and raised in Shanghai, and now lives and works in Kyoto. He earned his BFA in Photography at Kyoto University of the Arts (formerly Kyoto University of Art and Design), studying abroad at the École nationale supérieure de la photographie in Arles, France.
Gu’s work captures at once the sensations of the body moving through space as well as the accumulation of sights and scenes, then uses photography as a device through which to transform and reconfigure this information in wide-ranging ways. His unique method of weaving together time and space uncovers latent and unknown contexts that lie behind the information he collects.

[Important notes when reserving your visit]
-The garden paths are not wheelchair accessible, as the temple grounds include steps and areas covered in gravel.
-There is no heating system during zazen meditation, so please come in warm clothes.
-If it is hard for you to sit on a floor, you can practice zazen in a chair.
